My father was on the landing of Normandy. He would never speak of it. I have an uncle buried there. I do not know why he would tell us anything more. He was a member of the Wpg. Rifles and then transfered to some other outfit I know not where.

Dear Marc, I wrote to you last year in regards to this wonderful sight you have set up in honour of your two uncles. As I had written to you my name is Ron Legal, my grand uncle was Albert Legal who was Henri's childhood best friend & also inlisted with Henri & fought int the same regiment with Henri. My dad grew up in Ste. Genevieve & was 6 years younger then Henri but went to the same 1 room school house in Ste. Genevieve. Later in life after my grandfather passed away, my grand mother maried Henri's dad. So in a way Henri was my dad's step brother (with marriage). I'm writting to you this year for a different reason. I've been coaching a High School Hockey team here in Winnipeg for several years & would like to name the award for the most dedicated player of the team in Henri's honour. It would truly be a great chance to show to the next generation what the previous one had done in the name of there country & families. The award would be presented @ the end of the year sometime in early june. A plack bearing Henri's name & picture would be respectfuly done. R.S.V.P God bless You Marc. R.C. Legal

I was very pleased to find this website where many are trying to keep the remembrance of those who gave it all for their country and freedom.I am the youngest of 3 brothers who were in WWII. The eldest Graham Belyea was on the British merchant/troopship Nerissa which was torpedoed and sank in 1941.123 were lost not including crew members.73 Can. Army and 10 Can. Navy were included. Others included Allied personnel, American ferry pilots and some civilians.I have been able to research this tragic event but still do not know the details of how Graham perished. My other brother Allan an RCAF navigator flying with an RAF crew in 103 Squadron, Elsham Wolds was shot down on the way to Nuremburg March 31 1944. Martin Middlebrook's book "The Nuremburg Raid" covers this disaster very well. Allan is buried at the Commonwealth cemetery in Hanover, Germany which my wife and I visited 3 years ago. My own more limited experience was with the 41st LAD att. to the 28th(BCR) Armoured Regiment. We all were born and raised in Winnipeg, all attending Gordon Bell High School. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knew one of us or who has any information which might help me complete family memoirs. Harry Belyea

I am the nephew of Private George Hayes who served with the Loyal Edmonton Division during the many battles of the Italian campaign at the Moro River, the Battle of Ortona, and the Savio River. My uncle won the Silver Cross for bravery at the battle of the Savio River, but was saddly killed two days later, never knowing of this high recogntion of his valour and bravery. Having recently read the book about the Battle of Ortona, I was greatly moved by the incredible bravery, determination, and courage of the Canadian Army. Simple words cannot describe the incredible sacrifice that was made on our behalf. My uncle George Hayes was enlisted in the Loyal Edmonton Regiment although he was from Vancouver and attended McGee High School. He was under age when he joined the army and died before he saw his 20th birthday. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who knew my uncle, and/or who shared those epic battles and events in Italy. My uncle Private George Hayes, is survived by his younger sister and brother, Eleanor Michas (Hayes) and Donald Hayes. I know that both of them would appreciate your comments and in sight. The sacrifice of their beloved brother has shaped their lives and left an empty hole in their hearts.

Your latest entry on Kiska was both illuminating about the conditions prompting action against that lonely, arctic, desolate, yet somewhat strategic island. Henri Richard,my brother, did mention in a letter about having to wade/swim in the icy water, on landing day, only to find comfort in the tundra trench. he and his buddy Albert Legal dug. Lighting a smoke was forbidden. Later on, after confirming the japanese evacuation, their main concern were booby traps and land mines. Come spring, the whole island bloomed with a small field flower(purple), of which he brought a dried sample, home. It was laid/attached to his picture for many years. The only animals, he mentioned, were arctic blue foxes. Michel Richard

I think these kind of sites dedicated to our brave men and woman who served during World War 1 and 11 are respected by all who comes by it. My father, Norman Ritchie part of the 67th group served overseas, also my mother, Louvaine Acker was in the army but only stationed in Regina as part of the Medical Corp. Keep up the good work.

Dear Sir I am searching for information on Bing Coughlin. I am presently putting together an exhibition of the cartoonist, William Garnett (Bing) Coughlin?s body of work for the Department of National Defense in Ottawa, Canada. I and thought someone might have some information about Mr. Coughlin.. The only reference I have is that he died sometime in 1991. For several years, I have enjoyed the Herbie cartoons done by this man. "Bing" Coughlin?s creation, "Herbie" was a brilliant character who came to typify the ordinary Canadian private, so much so that Canadian soldiers became known as "Herbies", a tradition that in some units, is carried on to this day. Below, you will find a short biography of information I have procured thus far. I would appreciate any additional information you can provide in this quest. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Sincerely, Robert Mullan Cartoonist Bing Coughlan and "Herbie" William G. "Bing" Coughlin MBE was a member of the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards and saw action in the Sicily invasion. He was later a Sergeant on the staff ofMaple Leaf, the Canadian Army newspaper. His character, "Herbie" came to typify the ordinary Canadian private, so much so that Canadian soldiers became known as "Herbies", a tradition that in some units, is carried on to this day. Herbie and this Army," by William Garnet "Bing" Coughlin, first appeared in the Maple Leaf in the spring of 1944 in Naples, Italy. Bing's chinless hero Herbie became a particular icon at the front and "Herbie wuz here" graffitti marked the path of the Canadian advance. In 1944 Herbie was voted "Canadian Man of the Year" by the troops

I think that this is a wonderful thing that have done to Let us know what your uncles did and how they died.So often men give their lives for our freedom and are soon forgotten. My mother's youngest brother Martin Peterson died in 1945. He had been taken prisoner along with other soldiers and the German officer decided that he didn't want to take the prisoners with him so they were all shot. So sad that one man's whim can bring death to other good men. Martin was with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and Had lived in Garson Man.. I wish I had met him. My mother and all her siblings are gone now. Pauline

Dear Miss, please let me allow me to explain what I am trying to do..... Ever since I have been to Normandy and stood on the beaches and seen the towns, I wanted to do something about keeping the memory alive. And that urge only increased with time. Why I want to do this I cannot really say. It is an urge, a need if you will. My wish if for personal memories which will be featured on the site. Memories about the land, the fog, the weather, the rain, how the sun felt, the circumstances of living with the emotions involved. A site about the veterans telling the future generations what NEVER to do again. I want the words of the men who gave Europe it's freedom to be on the site. Not an edited story. I have been trying to find more veterans, but that is a hard conquest to achieve, for very understandable reasons. But I will keep trying. I am hoping that some of them will voluntarily send me a few of their memories. Which I could then put into the website. Of course I do not have the illusion that someone like me can make noticeable difference. But it will be my little tiny piece of the "Thank you" which we in Europe owe to you and your band of brothers who all fought for the same cause. Liberating a continent at the other side of the world. It would be a gift to receive emails or letters from you and your fellow veterans with memories in their own words. Which I will then put exactly on my website. I want my website to become a valuable source for the people who are willing to read and or see about it. Would you happen to know of fellow veterans who would so generous as to take the time to write down a few of their memories, to share with the rest of the world? All help is greatly appreciated. Because I do not want it to be fictional I want to be truthfull and accurate. Again I thank you deeply for all your trouble! It seems like helping out Europeans is getting to be a life time achievement for you. But please know that it will never be forgotten. It will always be a part of our freedom. The wings of the white doves of peace will always patched with the Canadian Veterans Insignia. I hope, if you find a little time, that you will be able to help me with my "story collecting" and I thank you deeply for your time and god bless you, your family. http://www.normandy1944.info Please can you help me?.....Hoping to hear from you again I remain, Stay in good health and take care my friend..., Frank Everards Mail address Hengelosestraat 292 7521 AM Enschede The Netherlands Internet address http://www.normandy1944.info Email address frank@normandy1944.info
