My Father, Kenneth Rowland was an original member of the Lincoln and Welland regiment. He fought as a signaller in company B from Normandy through Belgium, Holland and Germany. My sisters and I will be accompaning him to Belgium and Holland in May to see the places that he helped to liberate. We will be taking a memorial picture of his buddy and signalling partner William Roscoe who was KIA during the liberation of Bergen op Zoom. This is a picture of Roscoe who began in the Militia with my father when they were about 13 years old and trained together in Canada and England before Normandy. He has been greatly missed. We are wondering if there will be any other members of the Lincoln and Welland regiment going at that time.

Hello, What a great site.
Stanley Dudka joined N.P.A.M. (Non Permanent Active Militia), in 1937 at the age of 14 years and transferred to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in Sept 1939. He served with the Nova Scotia Highlands during WWII and was with the 3rd Canadian Division, C Company and landed at Berniere sur Mers, Normandy, France D Day.
He was captured by the Germans 3 times and escaped each time. (Stan was wounded in June 1944 in the shoulder, elbow, knee, Finger). He was also a witness at the Nuremberg Trial of Kurt Meyer having witnessed the murder of Canadian Soldiers at the Abbaye d'Ardenne near Authie . He was a loyal and dedicated member of the North Nova Highlanders (Company C), the Canadian Legion, and the Knights of Columbus until his death.
Recently my father has been nominated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to have a Canadian Coast Guard's new mid-shore patrol vessel named after him. Our family feels that your endorsement would be greatly valued in the decision.
The nomination is supported by Defence Minister Peter McKay, the Juno Beach Society, The Royal Canadian Legion and many other great leaders and organizations.
If you decide to endorse my father could you please CC me when the correspondence has been sent.
Minister of Fisheries: Gail Shea

Thank you to all soldiers who fight for right. My late father fought in WW2 and I know how the memories of war ate at him the rest of his life. Soldiers give up more than most realize.
Bless you all.
For those interested in the Italian campaign, I just found a book "And No Birds Sang" by Farley Mowat, his personal story. Very interesting and gives insight to those of us who have never had to go to war.

I am planning on visiting the grave of my cousin in Holten.
His name was Wm. Alexander McLean of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.
I wonder if it is possible to contact anyone who may have attended to his grave.

I am hoping to attend the events in Holland for the 65th anniversary, and also hoping that some of my friends will attend as well. All of us are the children of veterans. This site is really inspiring and I realize that I should be putting together a biography of my father who, although wounded in the Black Forest, did return to Canada. A wonderful website.

The 48th Highlanders of Canada Museum is trying to find a photo of all our fallen heroes. If you have a family member who served with the 48th Highlanders and did not come home we would be very thankful to get a picture of him for our archives.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them... on 11/11,at 11am silence!!!!
My dad Roger Brunel was one of the soldiers sent to Kiska during WW2. It was very interesting reading about it all on this website. Thank You. My dad used to tell us stories when he was sent to Kiska and how lucky they were to arrive there and the Japanese had left. I too am very thankful as I might not be here today..!

I came here to the site again today, on the anniversary of D-Day, what an endeavour that was, although Loren and Henri were still both in Canada on June 6th 1944. They too were soon in the thick of it and in time gave thier lives.
Thanks for this site Mark, We will Remember them.

Great site...Was researching my fathers exploits during his Tour of Europe as a Cameron Highlander and my Father in-law who was a tanker with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. How strange that my wife and I met with fathers who had served in the same division.
Outstanding work
Thank you kindly

Good job with the site, a fine memorial to all of the young people who died to give my generation freedom.
My Uncle is also buried in Holten. A rear gunner on Lancaster’s he was killed on the last mission of his tour with number IV squadron RAF Sept. 23/24th 1944. His pervious mission had been operation Parvane the attack on the Tirpitz. The surviving crew member was hidden by a Dutch family and liberated by the Canadian troops. My father who also served in the RAF, was Joes twin brother and was always comforted by the gratitude of the Dutch people. If anyone has any knowledge of where my uncle Leslie Joesph Hambly is buried in Holten or knows anything about the crash of his aircraft I would be pleased to hear from them.
Thank you,
Gary Hambly

Please feel free to visit our site as well and if you have anything from WWII that may be of help for our projects, please send them to us.
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
